The Providence String Quartet has been instrumental in both establishing and maintaining what has become known as one of the top community music programs in the country. Community MusicWorks was founded fourteen years ago with the vision of Brown graduate and Providence String Quartet violist Sebastian Ruth, who saw the need for musicians to transform the lives of communities through performances and music education. Making classical music readily accessible to the community, he and the Providence String Quartet presently offer free instrumental lessons to more than a hundred children living in impoverished neighborhoods in the inner city of Providence. Through this, the children receive hope and recognize that even though they might not grow up to be musicians, the possibilities are endless. He and the organization receives strong support from the local community as well as across the country; in fact, this program has been recently recognized as one of the best youth arts programs in the nation, receiving the 2010 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award in a White House ceremony. Their impact on the community has been significant, and Community MusicWorks looks forward to what the years may bring.
