The Manhattan String Quartet, in collaboration with concert pianist Sang Woo Kang, will perform a free chamber concert of works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Benjamin Britten, and Robert Schumann at 7 PM Saturday, March 22. The concert will be held in the Ryan Concert Hall in the Smith Center for the Arts, Providence College, Providence, Rhode Island.

The Boston Globe hailed the Manhattan String Quartet (www.manhattanstringquartet.com) as “a national treasure.” Well-known for their performances of 20th century music, the Quartet has garnered a significant international reputation, with regular concert appearances in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia. TIME Magazine called their recording of the complete cycle of the 15 Shostakovich string quartets “one of the most important musical events of 1991.” Devoted to the performance of the major string quartet repertoire as well as new music, they established the Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival, commission and perform new works, and produce a distinguished catalogue of recordings.

Sang Woo Kang, concert pianist, is an active performer and educator who presents master classes and concerts in Asia, Central and South America, and Europe. A devoted educator, he directs the Piano Institute and Seminar at the Atlantic Music Festival at Colby College, an annual four-week series of concerts and events focused on promotion and performance of new music. A solo album of Mozart’s piano works will be released on the NAXOS label later this year. In addition to his other activities, Kang reviews recent classical releases for American Record Guide and Clavier Companion. He currently chairs the Department of Music.
